How to screen record on a Mac with Chrome

macOS has its own screen recorder (⌘+Shift+5), but it can't zoom, blur passwords or edit. For web apps and demos, recording the Chrome tab with Zoomr gives you a finished video faster.

First-time setup on macOS

  1. Install Zoomr

and pin it in Chrome's toolbar.

  2. Allow microphone and camera

for Chrome in macOS if you want them: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone (and Camera) → turn on Google Chrome. macOS asks you to quit and reopen Chrome.

  3. Check your shortcut.

On a Mac, Chrome turns Zoomr's Ctrl into ⌘, so recording is usually ⌘+Shift+E. See your actual keys at chrome://extensions/shortcuts.

Tab recording doesn't need macOS "Screen Recording" permission, because Chrome captures its own tab.

Recording

  1. Open the page

to record and press ⌘+Shift+E (or the popup's Record button).

  2. Zoom

with a two-finger click on the trackpad (or Control+click). Keep pressing with two fingers for the deep zoom.

  3. Draw

by pressing and holding the trackpad, then dragging.

  4. Blur anything by hand

    with Option+click while recording.

  5. Stop

    with ⌘+Shift+E.

Frequently asked questions

Does Zoomr work on Apple Silicon Macs?

Yes. It runs inside Chrome, so any Mac that runs current Chrome works.

Can I record my whole Mac screen?

Zoomr records Chrome tabs. For other apps, use macOS's built-in recorder (⌘+Shift+5).
