How to turn a screen recording into a step-by-step guide

Some people want to watch a video, others want to follow written steps. Zoomr makes both from one recording: every click becomes a step with a screenshot and a sentence written from the page's own labels.

  1. Record the task

normally with Zoomr (version 1.12 or later). Click through it at a calm pace.

  2. Open the editor

and click the Guide tab at the top.

  3. Review the steps.

Each click or field you used is a step, like "Click Save changes" or "Select Europe/Belgrade in Time zone", with the clicked element highlighted.

  4. Edit the text.

Click a step to rewrite it; wrap words in double asterisks for bold. Move steps up or down, delete extras, add text-only steps.

  5. Add a title and introduction.

  6. Choose images:

Full screen (context) or Zoomed-in (detail).

  7. Export:

PDF (print → Save as PDF), a single HTML page, or Markdown (.zip with an images folder for Notion, GitHub or docs).

What makes the steps accurate

Zoomr writes each step from what the page says: button text, link text, field labels, menu items, tab names. Typing into a field becomes one "Type in the Email field" step; selecting from a list becomes "Select X in Y". Pages you move between appear as small headings.

Frequently asked questions

Is the guide feature free?

Yes. The free plan adds a small "Made with Zoomr" line to exported guides; Pro removes it.

My older recordings have no steps.

Guides need click information Zoomr started saving in version 1.12. Record the task again.

Can I make a guide without a video?

You still record, but you never have to export the video. Many people use Zoomr just for guides.
