How to make a software tutorial video

Structure

1. Outcome first:

   "In 4 minutes you'll set up X."

2. Prerequisites:

   what they need open or installed.

3. Steps:

   one clip per step, each starting with a text callout ("Step 2: Connect your calendar").

4. Recap and next tutorial.

Record

• Voice-over on; speak while you click, not after.
• Zoom on every control you name. If you say "the gear icon", zoom on the gear icon.
• Pause between steps with Ctrl+Shift+Y to set up the next screen.

Edit

• Smart Edit (Balanced) keeps explanations, trims waiting.
• Speed up installs and long loads to 3–4× instead of cutting, so viewers know time passed.
• Captions (Pro): non-native speakers and muted viewers.

Publish

• Video on YouTube or your help center (with the SRT file).
• Written guide (Guide tab) as a companion article.
